Elliptical mesh façade in Barcelona

Barceló Raval Hotel

Barceló Raval is a four-star design hotel situated in the heart of Barcelona. The elliptical building required a transparent façade cladding that grants the best possible view of the city while also offering effective solar protection and visual screening – made of a material that can follow the special architectural form of the hotel, cast it in the limelight in an avant-garde manner and subtly reflect the beauty of Barcelona.

For the cladding of the building façade the Spanish architects from CMV chose Escale stainless steel spiral mesh in a custom design with the largest possible mesh aperture and expanded spacing between round bars. The design of the mesh enables round, curved, amorphous or – as in this case – elliptical forms to be created.
The mesh panels were mounted in front of the glass façade that begins on the second floor – by means of bent flanges in the radius of the building, which were inserted into the top and bottom spiral of each panel, fixed to the substructure using clevis terminals and tensioned. Intermediate fixings prevent the large mesh panels from moving in an uncontrolled way.
