Ceiling design with metal fabric: a textile design eyecatcher

RMIT University, School of Fashion and Textiles

Fabric panels made of GKD Lago metal mesh were suspended in wide curves from the ceiling of the penthouse of the renowned School of Fashion and Textiles (RMIT University in Melbourne). The spectacular high-class ceiling design signalizes a contemporary design studio feel and hints at the rigorous training of the students. After all, graduates from RMIT's Fashion and Textiles Faculty work for names such as Dior, Louis Vuitton, or Alexander McQueen.

The unusual suspended ceiling made of shimmering fabric panels is reminiscent of gently falling waves of fabric. This impression is underscored by the textile structure of the stainless steel mesh. The ceiling design consists of 24 woven elements (each 1.20-1.80 m high and 2.90-7.00 m long). The mesh panels are fastened to the center of the ceiling by their long edge. The unusual ceiling design is accentuated by the orange backdrop to the curved metal fabric.
