Design mesh: golden ceiling concept for the Munich Chamber of Industry & Commerce (IHK)

HQ of the Munich Chamber of Industry & Commerce (IHK)

Golden mesh panels produce a high-grade ceiling design in the historic headquarters of the Munich Chamber of Industry & Commerce (IHK). Licorne 24a from GKD was chosen as the design mesh for this application. The shimmering aluminum spiral mesh with a three-dimensional appearance contrasts perfectly with the cool interior of the large trading hall of the headquarters. It lends the historic room a special atmosphere, in which history and modernity communicate visually with one another.

The ceiling concept with design mesh from GKD is one component of the comprehensive renovation of the headquarters, which was originally constructed in 1901. The HQ of the Munich Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) comprises two complexes, each of which is protected as a listed building. The historic building preservation requirements were therefore strict, requiring extensive coordination with the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, as well as the Munich Lower Authority for the Protection of Historic Monuments.

Shining beacon of design flexibility in diverse light conditions

The creative design concept of the architects from m2plan revolved around combining the old with the new in a carefully balanced relationship. The flexibility and versatility of the design mesh from GKD played to its strengths here. Some 62 golden mesh panels, arranged in a prominent position, really catch the eye in the large room. Targeted illumination of the refined, glossy aluminum mesh with ceiling-mounted spotlights highlights the three-dimensional appearance of the weave structure. The daylight that illuminates the room through large semicircular windows also supports the warm golden tone of the design mesh.

For the high-contrast ceiling design, the mesh panels (in ten different dimensions – from 700 to 1,600 mm in width and 1.000 to 2,300 mm in length) were suspended vertically from the ceiling. The mesh panels were attached using slide-in flats, to which the ceiling-mounted hangers were attached.
